Color Story Blue. February 2017

I joined the Color Story Collaboration project back in June 2015 with the color blue, and I fell in love. Like most projects I started, I only lasted a few months. Back in December though, Meghan Hassold, who started the project in the first place, decided it was time to jump back in. February was fun, but it felt difficult to remain motivated to shoot when the outside temps dipped below freezing. Here is the winter version of blue. Enjoy!

It’s been a while.

I know, I know. I keep saying I’m going to get this blog on track. Honestly, when I say it, I really mean it at the moment. Life happens though, and family things sometimes get in the way.

I’ve been away from my business since April, and things are finally starting to get back to “normal”. I’m really hoping to start blogging again, for real this time. 😉

Last week, my mini human decided that going outside to see a rainbow and a really cool sky was tolerable, so she twirled for me a few times in the field near us. I think I’m finally ready to get things back on track, just in time for summer sunsets!

Here’s to more sunset twirling in the months to come! -Jess

Another perk of being a VIP client, is that if ever I need to create an advertisement, I offer my VIPs the first pick! I mentioned on Thursday that the weather was going to be perfect for a “Rainy Day” session, and that I wanted to start advertising on Facebook for it. I posted in the VIP facebook group that I wanted to do the shoot. One of my favorite little families said they’d LOVE to! * yay *

We met at 10:30a on Friday morning at the park. Mom and I chatted a little bit, and then we got right to playing! I’ve been photographing these mini humans for over two years now, and I’m so excited I get to watch them grow. When we meet up, I already know that E will be full of smiles and giggles, and S will want to run around. I knew that I wanted to show them the waterfall, but to do that I would have to take them through an area that snapping turtles use for laying eggs. I told the mini’s that there might be snapping turtles around, and S was a little nervous about being snapped, so I even pinky promised him I would never let that happen.

We had so much fun playing and exploring that before we knew it, we had been playing for almost an hour and a half! I just love when I get to have days like that!

{{.First real snow. february 2016.}}

Our first “real” snow of the winter.

I’m a summer baby, so I’m generally unhappy if the weather dips below 70*. Winter is my least favorite time of the year, and I’m not one to hide my hatred of shoveling. However, I feel like there is something to be said about the beauty of freshly fallen snow. I feel a childlike excitement seeing the first “real” snow of the year, every year. By “real” snow, I mean at least 6”, and school closings, not 1-3” of light powder that you can’t even make a snowman with.

While I prefer the summer, I can take comfort in the knowledge that winter is only a few short months, and soon enough I can put away the winter clothes for another 7-9months. I hate the winter less if I get a few warmer days (days above 40*), and get to go exploring in the sun.

What a difference 3 days make, oh New England. // Hassanamesit Woods, South Grafton, MA // Hiking with my Love

Our first real snowstorm of the year this year was on February 5, 2016. We got maybe 8-9” of heavy wet snow. It bent and broke trees all over my neighborhood. I had been battling some serious sleep deprivation, and my Love let me nap and took care of the Mini Human (and even cleaned a bunch), since they both got a snow day. He woke me up about 40 minutes before the sunset so I could go for a walk and get some great pictures of the freshly fallen snow, since it had finally stopped snowing. (Did I mention I love him??)

{{.Frozen Bubbles, Finally!}}

After seeing an image of a frozen bubble I decided to give it a hand.

I see so many images in my newsfeeds on facebook and instagram that I am guilty of just scrolling by things. A frozen bubble stopped me in my tracks a few weeks ago. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. I wanted to see one for myself, in person. It took me three tries to get these shots, so I’ve decided to save you the frozen fingers, and, *gasp* tell you how I did it!

The first time I tried it was at night. It was 18* outside, and quite windy. I set up my cell phones flashlight on the railing of my front steps, and tried to get bubbles to land on the flat white railing in the light from my phone. After about 10 minutes outside with my 50mm, I couldn’t get the bubbles to land and freeze. My Love did a little research on his phone, and suggested I add a little dish soap to the mixture and let it sit outside for a little while to cool.

After eating a few bites of dinner, I went outside to try it again. While the mixture set well enough, it was too windy to be able to let the bubbles freeze without popping. My Love suggested I try to catch the bubble on the wand. As the bubbles freeze, they shrink slightly though, and when they started to shrink, they imploded.

This morning though, when I brought the kids out to the bus, it was 21* and the air was pretty still. I brought the bubbles out. The bus came before I could get any to land on the frost on my car, but I finally got them to cooperate!
